Commissioned in 2025, the Musonoi Copper Mine project integrates 31.5 MWp of solar PV, a 16.75 MW / 33.5 MWh grid- forming battery energy storage system (BESS), existing diesel generators, and utility grid supply into an intelligent hybrid microgrid. The solution delivers reliable, resilient power for critical mining operations while maximizing renewable energy utilization. Following full commissioning, the project reduced diesel consumption by over 42%, generating annual fuel cost savings exceeding USD 10 million and lowering the mine’s overall energy costs by approximately 38%. The system has eliminated production disruptions caused by grid instability, supporting year-round operations and increasing concentrator plant availability from 82% to over 98%. The project also reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 12,000 tonnes annually and serves as a flagship grid-forming solar-storage-diesel microgrid for large-scale mining operations across the Central African Copperbelt.
